Joel Wallins, creator of-in this editor’s not-so-humble opinion-the single greatest
snack item ever devised by mankind, Cajun Creole Hot Nuts, is at it again. Cajun Creole Products, the New Iberia, LA, company that brought you seasoned-in-the-shell peanuts hot enough to clear your sinuses, has introduced
Jalapeanuts, a milder south-of-the-border-spiced in-shell peanut. Distribution is only now revving up, with California the first target. Promotional plans include a construction of the Hot Nuts in Hollywood strategy, which has
had the product popping up in the background of episodes of Roseanne, Northern Exposure, and Beverly Hills 90210. Suggested retail is $1.59 to $1.79 for a 10-oz. bag.
Competition: The not-in-the-shell nuts business took
a dip in the second quarter of 1993, falling a bit more than 1% versus second quarter 1992, to $617 million. Though nuts have gotten a bad rap in the health wars of the last few years, Jalapeanuts could find a niche-if Wallins &
company can get them out of the produce section and into the snack and beverage aisles.
